Major State Legislature Wins in 2024

37 states license or recognize the RA!

Major wins in Washington D.C., Delaware, and Michigan.

The SRPE actively works with the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) to support the licensure of not only the RA (RRA and RPA) but ALL medical imaging and therapy professionals.

In New Hampshire, SRPE opposed House Bill 1410, a bill that sought to amend and repeal licensure laws across many professions, including licensure for medical imaging and radiation therapy. The SRPE and our partner organizations sent letters opposing the inclusion of medical imaging and radiation therapy, and New Hampshire Society of Radiologic Technologist members spoke in opposition to the bill during committee hearings. The bill was amended by the House Executive Departments and Administration Committee to remove medical imaging and radiation therapy from the bill.

In Michigan, the qualification requirements of individuals engaged in medical radiologic technology and who operate ionizing radiation equipment were finalized the week of March 14, 2024, and went into effect on March 20.

Washington D.C. now licenses medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals thanks to the work of the ASRT. The ASRT submitted recommendations to the Council of the District of Columbia, advocating for appropriate education and training standards for medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals.

Delaware became the 37th state to recognize or license RAs, due to the herculean effort of an RA student and SRPE student member. The definition of the RA and the scope of practice were added to the Delaware regulations. SRPE and partner organizations wrote letters of support during the public comment period. The regulations were approved and enacted on October 11, 2024.

In the 2025 legislative session, the SRPE along with partner organizations will continue its advocacy for the recognition of the RA and medical imaging and therapy professionals at the local, state, and national levels. The SRPE will focus on states with upcoming legislative or regulatory actions regarding the RA including Georgia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, California, Maine, and Alabama.

The SRPE will continue to push for the introduction of the Federal Medicare Access to Radiology Care Act (MARCA) bill, which provides payment for all RA-performed services to the supervising radiologist in any care setting during the 119th Congress.

Keep Pushing!
